Radio Frequency Control:  When using your radio to send e-mail It is very helpful to have your radio frequency controlled from your computer so that when you choose your Winlink or Sailmail station frequency in the Airmail program, the radio will immediately go to that frequency.

This function is particularly useful when you are using a Commercial Marine Single Sideband Transceiver as these units do not have variable tuning, but have their transmit and receive frequencies available in channels that you must physically switch between.  To change or update a channel frequency you must program both the transmit and receive channel memories  for each channel.

SCS PTC-IIpro and SCS PTC-IIusb:  If you are using either of these modem models, transceiver frequency control is achieved using a cable connected between the modem and the radio.

SCS PTC-IIex:  If you are using this modem model, transceiver frequency control is not available directly from the modem.   You must use a separate SERIAL or USB port on your computer. 

Custom Modem Kits:

For most modem installations three foot cables will be sufficient.  However, if you require longer cables for your installation please provide those cable lengths below:

Ham vs. Marine Transceivers:  (SCS PTC-IIex modems only)

Most marine transceivers will accommodate RS232 serial data levels, but some amateur HF transceivers will only accept TTL levels.  If your transceiver will only accept TTL levels (+5V and Ground) you will require an RS 232 to TTL adapter to implement computer  frequency control.

Note:  This is not a problem if you are using a PTC-IIpro or PTC-IIusb as both of these modems provide both output levels.

GPS Functions:   In many marine applications the computer is a multi use tool used for e-mail communication and electronic charts.  If you are using electronic charts you most likely will have your GPS interfaced with your computer.  If this is the case you can send current location data automatically as part of your e-mails and your HF propagation program will know your location at all times, otherwise you will have to enter your coordinates manually so that the propagation program knows your coordinates for its calculations.  If you do not have your GPS interfaced with your computer, you might wish to add this function.
