White Squall Consulting Inc. has just completed design of the 'Bilge Rat' 2 level bilge water sensor! The ‘Bilge Rat’ two level sensor was designed to provide the mariner with a reliable method of sensing bilge water levels for: ● automatic bilge pump control, ● high water level alarm indication. Operation The sensor design offers two options:
Option 1 Basic 2 Level Sensor/Pump Interface Option 1 shows the system configuration which allows the level one sensor output to be directly connected to a bilge pump for automatic operation. The level 2 sensor output provides a ground on one conductor of the sensor cable to activate an audible alarm. Basic Sensor Operation When bilge water reaches the first sensor level, a ground is provided on one conductor in the sensor cable to activate a bilge pump.
When the bilge water level reaches the second sensor, a ground is provided on another conductor in the sensor cable to activate a 12 volt solid state audible alarm. This alarm indicates that the bilge pump is unable to keep up with water ingress.
Option 2 Two Sensor/Controller Interface Option 2 shows the system configuration which connects a maximum of two sensors in separate bilge locations, to a microprocessor based smart controller that has the capability of controlling two separate bilge pumps. This automatic controller has an ON/OFF switch, 4 line, 20 character per line LCD, two manual bilge pump switches, an ACO (Alarm Cut OFF) and activity indication switch. Automatic Controller Operation ● When both pumps are OFF, the LCD displays ‘Pump 1 OFF’ on line 1 and ‘Pump 2 OFF’ on line 3. ● If a high level alarm occurs, the LCD displays - ‘P1 High Level Alarm’ on line 2, - ‘P2 High Level Alarm’ on line 3, The audible alarm function will also be activated. ● During a high level alarm condition the audible alarm can be switched off by activating the ACO Switch, (Alarm Cut OFF). The display will then indicate ‘ACO Switch ON’ on LCD line 2 for Pump 1 and LCD line 4 for Pump 2.
Every time either pump completes a start/stop cycle this information is stored in the micro processor’s memory. The user can find out how many times either pump has cycled since the system was powered up, by activating the pump cycle switch located on the controller. Pump 1 activity is displayed on LCD line 2 and Pump 2 activity on LCD line 4. Manual Pump Operation: A manual pump ON/OFF switch is provided on the controller for both bilge pumps. When this switch is activated, LCD line 1 will indicate that either Pump 1 is operating in the manual mode. LCD line 4 will indicate Pump 2 is operating in Manual mode. 2-Level Sensor Characteristics: ● D.C. Power requirements: 12 volts @ 20 mA or 24 Volts @ 10 mA, ● All electronic operation - no moving parts, ● No corrosion issues as all sensor components are totally insulated from bilge water eliminating the possibility of current flow between the sensor and ground through the bilge water, ● 2-level sensing: - One output for bilge pump control, - A second output for a high water level alarm function. ● Fully adjustable distance between level one and two sensor trip points, ● Operation not affected by bilge water contaminants, ● Capability to measure all liquids and even solids in the form of powder, ● Simple calibration procedure, ● Stable operation.
